How to play “Wild Thing” by The Troggs on guitar

In this lesson I am going to show you how to play a really simple guitar riff which involves just three chords. The riff comes from “Wild Thing” written by Chip Taylor of The Wild Ones but made famous by The Troggs. It’s a really simple and recognisable riff which is great for beginners.

The chords needed for this song are the following:

A Major

D Major

E Major

The riff is in 4/4 timing and goes as follows:

Rhythm: | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |

                            | A   A        D D    |E    E        D D    |         

Simply strum down on each chord in the above rhythm in order to play the riff. If you are struggling with the rhythm, the best way to get the hang of it is to play it along with the song.  Here is the original version:

You might notice that the rhythm varies slightly sometimes in the original version, however if you start off with the rhythm as shown above, you can add your own variations to the rhythm as you get more confident.
